EU sets world’s first voluntary standard for permanent carbon removals

the Commission adopted the first set of methodologies under the carbon removals and carbon farming (CRCF) Regulation to certify activities that permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 — a topic generating more conversation than ever, and for good reason. Understanding the landscape helps. The 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 carbon market is largely built on emission reductions and avoided emissions.

As opposed to the 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 market, which is increasingly focused on carbon 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘴 — and this is where things get exciting. The voluntary removal market is still relatively small, split between 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-based removals (such as reforestation) and 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆-based removals (primarily Direct Air Capture and Biochar Carbon Removal).

Of these, tech-based removals stand out for their 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 — and right now, Biochar Carbon Removal (
BCR) accounts for the large majority of volumes delivered globally. At our core, we believe carbon removals are essential for addressing 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 emissions — not just reducing what we emit today.

That's why we're excited by a landmark development: the EU has adopted the world's first voluntary 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 standard for permanent carbon removals under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF, Regulation 2024/3012). The framework covers three permanent carbon removal methods, chosen for their technological readiness and climate potential:

🔹 Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR)
🔹 Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (DACCS)
🔹 Biogenic Emissions Capture with Carbon Storage (BioCCS)

For a
biochar startup like ours, robust, credible carbon credits aren't a nice-to-have — they're foundational. This EU framework brings long-overdue clarity, integrity, and investor confidence to a market that is set to play a critical role in reaching net-zero.
