Scouting the Future of Biochar: Inside Brabant's Biomass Landscape

Today the Better Carbon team hit the road to scout new locations for our future biochar production hubs — and it took us to a large biomass processing facility in the province of Brabant.

Why does this matter?

Right now, woodchips from facilities like this one are largely destined for energy plants, burned for power. But as the world looks for smarter, more sustainable ways to use biomass, that's set to change. Pyrolysis — the process that turns woody biomass into biochar — offers a compelling alternative: instead of releasing carbon back into the atmosphere through combustion, it locks it away in a stable form that can improve soil health for decades.

A surprising opportunity in an unlikely place

You might not think of the Netherlands as a biomass powerhouse — it's a small, densely populated country with relatively little forest cover. But that's exactly what makes this so interesting. The real opportunity isn't in forestry at all. It's in the country's substantial agricultural sector, which generates more than enough residual agri-wood biomass every year to fuel a growing biochar industry.

That's a big deal. It means biochar production here doesn't have to compete with forests or food production — it can run on material that would otherwise go to waste or lower-value energy use.

Niche today, mainstream tomorrow

Biochar is still a niche market. Most people have never heard of it. But the tide is turning — driven by growing demand for durable carbon removal, healthier soils, and circular uses for biomass residues. Scouting trips like today's are how we find the right sites, the right partners, and the right feedstocks to help build that future.

More updates soon as we continue exploring locations for Better Carbon's next production hub.
