Biochar is capable of removing and mitigating several types of pollution and contaminants across different applications. In general can perform similarly to Activated Carbon for many compounds/pollutants. Biochar can also be steam/acid activated for specialized use in water treatment but already does contaminant management without activation.
Waterborne contaminants: Thanks to its highly porous structure, biochar can be used for water filtration to adsorb heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and other contaminants from water streams.
Agricultural runoff pollution: When applied to farmland, biochar holds onto nitrogen and other nutrients, preventing them from leaching away and significantly reducing nutrient runoff pollution.
Heavy metals, PAHs, PFAS (more effective if activated), Organic pollutants (pesticides, hydrocarbons)
Odour contaminants: When mixed into compost, biochar helps control and suppress odorous gas emissions, specifically ammonia and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S)
